The month of September was quite special. We were able to return to Amarillo and were very happy to do so! We welcomed our returning friends as well as our new friends and had a lot of fun getting to know each other with our “all about me” unit. We also revisited Peace Education and reviewed grace and courtesy. The children were very excited to welcome the fall season and they began to observe as the leaves started to change color.
In the month of October we have been learning about pumpkins. So far we have learned that a pumpkin is a fruit and that there are different types of pumpkins! I am slowly bringing different types of pumpkins in the classroom; the children are very excited to collect the 6 different types that we are learning about. As the month continues, we will also be learning the parts of a pumpkin as well as the life cycle of a pumpkin. I have also incorporated our unit in different areas of the classroom. Pumpkin scrubbing, pumpkin seed tweezing and pumpkin quantity to numeral association have been quite popular to name a few! Towards the end of the month we will also be doing estimation on how many seeds there are inside the pumpkin that we will carve for Halloween. We are very excited to continue our unit and look forward to doing more fun activities this month!

The month of May was quite eventful, we enjoyed teacher appreciation week and are so thankful for the wonderful surprise we received from parent volunteers; we certainly love our new staff lounge! The children had a wonderful time making their mother’s day gifts and were very excited to celebrate this special day with their families. We also welcomed our friends Sabina and Felipe and we are so excited to have them join our classroom!
In the middle of the month the Azul teachers and I learned how resilient the children truly are. With the unfortunate flooding incident that affected both Amarillo and Azul, we were given the opportunity to join forces and combine classrooms until the end of the school year. The children have been wonderful and have really helped us make this a smooth transition. As you all know, Miss Khavitha is preparing to begin her new journey as an Elementary teacher and Miss Apsara and I have been able to work together to create an atmosphere that allows the children to be a part of one group. For the month of June, Miss Apsara and I have decided to begin a new unit on sunflowers. We are very excited to create this unit as a team and look forward to exploring subjects such as their life cycle, the parts of a sunflower, the different types of sunflowers and how tall a sunflower can be. We will also be creating fun sunflower art as well as making some delicious sunflower seed snacks. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting month! Kind regards, Miss Monica I had such a wonderful time getting to know everyone in April and I am looking forward to new children joining our group in May! We have spent a lot of time learning some of our classroom rules and getting used to our daily routine. We focused on Practical Life and practiced taking care of our fragile works by walking slowly while holding them and making sure they were put away nicely so they can be used by another friend. The children have been working very hard in taking care of our classroom; I have noticed that they are making a conscious effort to make sure everything is nice and neat. We also focused on grace and courtesy and have practiced using polite words to ask for help as well as being respectful of each other’s work and space. Lastly, we welcomed our new friends Stella and Max and we are so happy to have them in our classroom!
We will continue practicing care of the environment and grace and courtesy throughout the month of May as this will help us make a smooth transition into Peace Education. I have already introduced our peace table; the children really appreciate having the opportunity to take a moment to recharge before choosing a work or getting back to a work that requires more time and concentration. The peace table is also a good tool for them to use when they are feeling sad, or even mad or frustrated. We are learning that sometimes we do not feel happy and it is okay if we need space and time to feel calm again. I will begin to introduce our peace rose; the peace rose will be used as a means to resolve any conflict that may arise in the classroom. If a child is feeling sad or mad due to something another friend did or said, both children will take turns holding the peace rose so they can express how they feel and come up with a peaceful way to solve the problem. I will also introduce our “I think you’re wonderful” necklace. At any given moment, a child may gently put the necklace on a friend who has done a kind act or might need a little extra love to get through the day. We will also explore the meaning of peace and how taking care of our Earth is a very important part of being peaceful. This will tie in with topics such as recycling, composting, taking care of plants, taking care of the ocean and taking care of all animals. Last but not least, we will discuss appropriate ways of expressing our feelings and how to be respectful of the way other people feel.
