The month of November in el Salon Amarillo was a busy one. We learned about the solar system and began a series of art projects on the planets, beginning with the sun. We also discussed Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving, and had the opportunity to share some of the things for which we feel thankful. Our music, art, and Spanish lessons continue to be popular with the children.
We decorated a box for Mary’s Place, and the school is accepting donations of hats, scarves, gloves, and jackets until December 16th. Thank you very much to all who have donated; with the holiday season upon us we will discuss in the class the kindness of thinking of others while we are enjoying our special celebrations. It’s a great lesson in empathy to have your child help you to choose an item to purchase for donation. In December we will continue with our look at the planets and anticipate completing all or at least most of the planets with art activities. We will also be learning more about the holidays celebrated in December: Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. With the cold, wintery weather upon us, we are glad to see the children coming with warm coats and accessories to keep them warm on our playground, which we visit daily unless the weather is really bad. Please be sure to mark your child’s name on any hat, mitten, or glove that comes to school; they go astray easily.

The month of October certainly flew by! At circle times we discussed peace as an extension of grace & courtesy lessons. Our peace and grace & courtesy lessons have helped to form a foundation of community that we see forming in the classroom. Later in the month we began a look at community helpers and what they do. A group of firefighters visited the school, coincidentally the day after a school fire drill, so the discussion of fire drills, their purpose, and what to do in one, was a predominant source of conversation for the children.
We enjoyed a visit from Mad Science and learned about insects, and late in the month we had a wonderful session of carving our own individual pumpkins. Our weekly art lessons with Ms. Michelle are very popular. The children learned about Henri Matisse, warm and cool colors, and made some beautiful autumn wreaths. In November we will begin a study of the solar system, and take a look at the holidays that fall in the month as well: Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. Welcome to a new school year in Amarillo! We had a busy September in which we got acquainted with one another and the children settled into the routine of school. At circle times we focused on lessons of grace and courtesy, including walking around a mat, taking turns to speak at circle and using listening ears for one another, and using polite words of asking and thanks when speaking to one another. These small acts of kindness are leading into our discussions on peace and how we can create peace in the world by beginning with acts of peace with one another. Later in October, we will learn about community helpers.
We welcomed a new pet into our classroom: a dwarf hamster who the children christened Daisy Carrots. The children are enjoying observing her activities and watching her when we put her into her exercise ball to move about the room. The children really love to look at the photos of their families. If you have not yet had a chance to send in a framed photo of your own family, we would be happy to receive it and have it join our collection. Ms. Sunanda and I are delighted to observe the ownership of the class that the children are taking, building their community in caring for their environment and one another. |
