The month of April was quite busy! We explored our zoology section and focused on the bird. We studied the parts of the bird as well as different types of birds from the rain forest. We also celebrated Earth Day with a wonderful music concert and had our yearly hop-a-thon. We began to work on our Mother's Day presents; the kids had a great time working with dad volunteers on a sewing project. Art was quite popular as well. The children began to explore different painting techniques, and our easel was always in use!
In the month of May, we will be moving away from our rain forest theme to learn about safety. Topics of discussion will include safety in the classroom, in the playground and in public places. We will also talk about what to do if a stranger approaches us. Lastly we will talk about important personal information that we should know in case of an emergency.

In the month of March we took a trip back to the rainforest and learned about the people who thrive there. The children were very interested to see how they build their homes, what they eat, how they deal with illness and how they socialize through groups called "tribes". We learned so much through books, pictures and short videos. We also had group discussions about how our way of life differs from theirs and what we would like to do if we had a chance to live in the rain forest. The children said they would love to grow their own food, build heir homes with leaves and sticks and paint their faces with different colors so they could be in a tribe. Lastly, we touched on the subject of rainforest conservation and how important it is for trees to not be destroyed so that the people and animals who depend on them for food, shelter and medicine can continue to use them for years to come.
We also had some time to spend with parent volunteers. Sabina's mom joined us and helped the children make Irish soda bread just in time for St. Patrick's day. Niamh's dad joined us for circle time to talk about this holiday and what it means to him and his family. Nara's mom joined Miss Katherine and helped her with gardening activities. We also welcomed our art teacher, Miss Michelle and the children had so much fun learning about Vincent van Gogh as well as recreating their own version of The Starry Night. It was quite the busy month all around! ![]() February was quite a busy month! We discussed the topic of seasons, and the children enjoyed sharing their thoughts on how seasons and climate change throughout the year. We took a look at how winter feels and what it looks like as well. The children constantly talked about their hopes to have a snow day, and they all agreed snow is the best part of winter. We also talked about the fact that some parts of the world (such as the rainforest) do not experience winter like we do. Even here in the United States, some states are feeling very much like summer. They couldn't believe this can happen! We also looked back at fall and reminisced on what that looked and felt like. The children concluded that having multicolored leaves is the best part of fall (well, that and making a pile of them and then jumping right in!). We have also begun an official countdown to welcome the season of Spring; we can't wait! I also want to take this time to give a big thanks to all the parents who have volunteered in and out of the classroom; we certainly appreciate all you do! In the month of March we will be taking a trip back to the rainforest to learn about the people who live and thrive there. |
